Researcher, Global Policy Horizons Research LabRead More: How Webster Shaped Josh’s Future in Global Policy
Josh Hayes has been a history buff since he could remember.
“I was almost obsessed with history, the U.S. system of government. My talent show performance when I was in first grade was naming all the presidents forward and backward.”
Years later, Josh’s interest led him to to study political science. His experiences on campus began to shape his views.
“The Webster campus is a great example that we have so many different people from all around the world.”
In fact, students at Webster’s main campus in St. Louis come from about 60 different countries.
“A lot of the classes that are offered are international politics and international relations, and that geared me to also think about those avenues,” Josh says. “It's definitely challenged me to think about not just our own country, but also the entire world.
Josh gravitated toward studying and understanding conflict around the world. He assumed most of his work would be theoretical until he began studying under Professor Dani Belo, who launched the Global Horizons Policy Lab in 2023.
At the lab, Josh has been researching Middle East conflict resolution. Along with his lab colleagues, on the Israel-Gaza conflict at the .
“I’m actually proposing things that have not been done yet. It's not just about understanding theory, you have to come up with new ideas.”
The lab aims to be a resource to help inform governments and members of the global policy community on security challenges.
"As a global university with campuses around the world, it only made sense that we also have a central resource where people can pursue academic research in international affairs,” Belo says.
Josh says Belo has also helped him make professional connections with those who study and create policy.
“My hope and expectation are that it would make me stand out among others. Not a lot of schools necessarily have this opportunity for undergrads, having these specific things that I can point to on a resume, that I produced a report, or I have presented at these conferences or spoken to these agencies.”
It’s been a full circle experience for a history buff who is working to shape what’s happening around the world today.
“I'm hoping my experiences are something that I can really boast about in the future.”
